A man who stabbed his partner to death in front of their 21-month-old son before turning the knife on himself has been found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison today.

Hadim Kedik (33) with an address at 10 Connolly Street, Clonakilty, Co Cork, was found guilty of murdering, mother of three Rose Patterson by a jury of seven men and four women just after 3pm in the Central Criminal Court.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy sentenced the Turkish national who arrived in Ireland in 2002 to work in a barbershop in Clonakilty to a mandatory life sentence.

The courtroom was quiet when the verdict was read. Ms Patterson's family asked for a short statement to be read to the court in memory of their daughter.

They said it was with shock disbelief and dreadful sorrow they learnt their only child had died last April.

During the trial the court heard details of the couple's relationship and of the events on April 11th and 12th last when Kedik stabbed her eight times leaving her to bleed to death in front of their son while he cut his own throat and wrists.

The court also heard of the trail the toddler had left as he moved between his fatally injured mother and his father.
