Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has vowed to introduce a single label for all Irish food products if his party is in government after the general election.

At a pre-election rally in Carlow last night, Mr Kenny said the Republic's food industry could be transformed into a world leader "with the right combination of leadership, State support and smart thinking.

"I don't underestimate the challenges which are facing Irish farmers," he said. "But I believe that . . . we can not only win that fight, we can transform our food industry into a world leader."

He said the Fine Gael plan was about "thinking smart, giving Irish food that all-important competitive edge through smarter marketing of our quality product.

"That means introducing a single food label for all Irish produce. The Green Ireland label will be an easily recognisable brand in the domestic and overseas markets," Mr Kenny said.

The plan also proposes incentives for promoting biofuels: making it law that all motor fuels include a blend from renewable sources, removing all excise duty on biofuels produced from renewable energy crops, and having State subsidies for setting up biofuel processing plants.
