KENNY’S BOOKSHOP in Galway has given details of its ambitious plans to take on the web-based international firm Amazon.

Kenny’s Bookshop has initiated a new online shop (www.kennys.ie) this week, stocking more than five million titles.

It says it will provide free shipping worldwide on every title despatched from its warehouse in Galway, and from overseas bases in Britain, North America and Europe.

Amazon has six sites serving Britain, North America, Canada, Japan, Germany and France.

"We aim to be an amazon.ie, even though we work with them," Tom Kenny of the family business told The Irish Times.

The business, which was started by Des and Maureen Kenny in a room on Galway’s High Street, is 70 years old this November.

The late Maureen Kenny adopted direct-marketing strategies before the phrase was heard of, and the bookshop and art gallery became a Galway landmark, before moving to the Liosbán industrial estate on the city’s outskirts.
