The highlight of the second Kerry Film Festival, which opens tonight in Dingle, will be the Philip King (Hummingbird Productions) film, Beautiful Mistake.

It is the story of the Welsh musician, John Cale, who, together with Lou Reed, formed the Velvet Underground, the legendary New York band of the 1960s which teamed up with Andy Warhol for one of his avant-garde extravaganzas - Nico and the Velvet Underground.

The show toured north America in 1966 to various shades of critical and uncritical acclaim. Cale was a native Welsh speaker until 10 years of age, and King's film brings him back to his roots to interact with today's Welsh music scene.

Between now and Sunday, at venues around Kerry, the festival will screen over 50 shorts. It aims not only to be a showcase for short films but to win over new audiences to the genre, according to the artistic director of the festival, Mr Maurice Galway. One of the shorts is SΘ Mo Laoch by Niamh N∅ Bhaoill, a celebration of the great Sliabh Luachra box player, Johnny O'Leary.
