Ten gardaí in Co Kerry have informed their superintendent they will not work out of their temporary accommodation in Castleisland from July 1st.

Garda Representative Association (GRA) national executive member for Kerry, Dave McMahon, said the gardaí were being forced to work in "completely unacceptable conditions" during their 18-hour station day in the former credit union building.

Their poor accommodation was affecting the policing of the town, which was troubled by a core group of "20 young thugs", he said.

The gardaí have now written to Supt Michael Maher in Killarney telling him they would report for duty to their district headquarters in Killarney, not Castleisland, from July 1st. Any calls would be answered from Killarney.

Four years ago an arson attack destroyed the Garda station in Castleisland.

Since then gardaí have had no access to a cell in the town or to the computerised Pulse system and have to travel to Killarney a half-hour away with a prisoner.

Very often this leaves the town without a Garda presence as two officers are required during the transfer to Killarney, Garda McMahon said.

"Our working conditions are impossible. They are unfair on gardaí and on the public.

"The public office is smaller than a living room," he said.

The old credit union building was not good enough for their employees eight hours a day yet it was good enough for gardaí 18 hours a day, he added.

The GRA is to invite Minister for Justice Michael McDowell to inspect the Garda station when he attends the association's conference in Tralee at the end of April.
