Tehran - Prominent reformers backing President Mohammad Khatami are leading in elections for city council seats in the capital, Tehran, with religious conservatives trailing, newspapers said yesterday.
No official confirmation was available but newspapers based their reports on what they said were "informed" Interior Ministry sources. Reports from the central city of Isfahan, the most politicised after Tehran, showed similar trends. Nationwide balloting for local seats ended late on Friday, with official results expected later this week.
