A kidney donated by former Derry footballer and GAA pundit Joe Brolly to fellow coach Shane Finnegan’ has been removed due to complications following the transplant.
Mr Finnegan had received the kidney from Mr Brolly during an operation at Guys Hospital in London on October 3rd.
In a statement the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, of which the two men were patients, said after initially functioning well, complications had developed and the kidney was removed from Mr Finnegan on October 12th. This failure of the transplant was in this case a “rare and unfortunate occurrence” the trust said.
Both men were keen to support the trust’s campaign for organ donation and when fit and ready have agreed to spearhead a drive to increase the number of donors, it said.
“Mr Finnegan is confident that with the continued support of family and friends he will be home soon and able to resume a full family and work life,” the statement said. Mr Brolly continues to recover “very well” from the donation, the trust said.
