OF the 1,631 people in Kilcock, Co Klldare, town of Kilcock eligible to vote according to the electoral register, 937 (57 per cent) voted yesterday on the draft development plan for the town and rejected it resoundingly.

The final vote was 623 (67 per cent) votes to 312 (33 per cent) in a referendum organised by the local Concerned Residents group.

People were asked to vote for or against the plan in a poll which took place from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. yesterday. There were two spoiled votes.

The Concerned Residents group oppose the development plan, claiming it will have a negative effect on the quality of life in the area. Mr Denis Creighton, group spokesman, said they would now present the result to local councillors, Kildare county councillors, and constituency TDs.

Some local traders, however were unhappy that they were deemed ineligible to vote, as they are not on the electoral register. One such trader, who favours the development plan, said that 35 others had also been prevented from voting for that reason.

Responding to this, Mr Creighton pointed out that many others resident in the town and particularly those living nearby, who were not on the electoral register, were also opposed to the development plan.
