The plight of two Co Kildare Traveller families who have been living on the side of the road without running water or toilet facilities is to be eased by the local authority.
A High Court judgment on the case was adjourned yesterday after Kildare County Council undertook to provide emergency facilities within a four-week adjournment.
The council agreed to install facilities in a field next to the Ardrew halting site in Athy while the families are waiting on permanent halting-site accommodation in the area.
Speaking on behalf of the Carthy families, Sr Rosari of the Athy Travellers Club said they would be glad to get off the road as soon as possible. "I would like to see something in place, especially because one of the girls had a new baby yesterday, and they are living in bad conditions.
"They don't have the basic facilities of toilets, sanitation, running water. They can't even wash their own clothes," said Sr Rosari.
The Carthys took the case against the council to force the local authority to deal with their accommodation needs as outlined in the 2000-2004 Traveller Accommodation Plan.
A council spokesperson said the case was due before the High Court again on June 24th to allow the council to comply with its undertaking.
