A Co Kildare man who brandished a slash hook and a can of petrol during a 10-hour stand-off at his home gave himself up to gardaí yesterday morning.

The man, who is in his 40s, barricaded himself into his house on the Curragh at 9pm on Thursday.

The stand-off occurred when gardaí were called to his home shortly before 9pm.

Two people were arrested following a drugs search of the house. The third man produced a slash hook and what appeared to be a container of petrol, paraffin or flammable liquid. He then refused to come out of the house or open the door.

The other two men were taken to Naas Garda station while the remaining gardaí dealt with the tense situation. The man asked gardaí to have his doctor come to the scene and also asked for his solicitor.

Local roads were closed and the area was cordoned off as gardaí tried to talk the man into leaving the house.

The ambulance and the fire brigade were also called to the scene.

Gardaí from Kildare, Newbridge and Naas were on duty overnight outside the house.

Shortly after 8am yesterday, after discussions with his solicitor, the man agreed to leave the building. He was brought to Kildare Garda station.

There was no one else in the house during the stand-off, and no injuries occurred in the incident.

The man is due to appear before Kildare District Court on April 14th.
