THE jury in the trial of a young Co Kildare man charged with murdering his girlfriend is due to resume hearing the case at the Central Criminal Court this morning.

Mr Justice Budd sent the jury away last Thursday afternoon while legal discussion took place in their absence.

The trial was due to resume before the jury yesterday afternoon, but legal discussion was still continuing and the 11 men and one woman were told to return to court this morning.

The jurors are hearing the trial of Mr Stephen Davis (20), of Clonmullin, Athy, Co Kildare, who has denied the murder of Ms Mary Doogue (30), of the same address, in Athy on October 20th, 1995.

The six day trial has heard that Mr Davis was the live in partner of Ms Doogue and the father of her youngest child. Ms Doogue was unmarried and had six children. The youngest three lived with her and Mr Davis. The other three lived with her mother.

The State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, has said that Ms Doogue died from delayed shock due to a combination of subdural haemorrhage, contusion of the larynx, dislocation of the right shoulder and rupture of the bladder.

Ms Doogue was pronounced dead at Naas Hospital at 7.25 p.m. on October 20th, 1995, just hours after she was brought injured from her home by ambulance to the hospital.
