Roy Whiting, the man jailed for killing British schoolgirl Sarah Payne, has been stabbed by another prison inmate, according to media reports today.
Whiting suffered facial injuries during the fracas which occurred on yesterday, Sky News said.
West Yorkshire police confirmed they had been called to reports of an assault on a prisoner at Wakefield Prison on Sunday, but would not give the victim's name.
A spokeswoman said the prisoner had been taken to hospital for treatment to cuts on the side of his mouth, and was later returned to the jail.
She added officers would be speaking to the man today to see if he wanted to make a complaint.
Whiting, who had previous child abuse convictions, was jailed for life last December for kidnapping and murdering eight-year-old Sarah in July 2000.
The high-profile case prompted public demands for a "Sarah's Law" where communities would be given more information about child sex offenders and their whereabouts.
