SIPTU workers at Knock Airport, Co Mayo, are still refusing to co-operate with Aer Arann's new daily "Early Bird" service between Knock and Dublin.

In a secret ballot yesterday, the airport workers voted to continue the policy of not co-operating with the new service. They indicated, however, that they were willing to refer the matter to the Labour Relations Commission (LRC).

Airport management had repeated its offer of 10 per cent - £24 per week - to the workers, with the promise that the deal would be reviewed in six months.

Workers unanimously rejected the review clause and co-operation with the new service. SIPTU branch secretary Mr Sean Nolan said the union would be available day or night for talks with airport management on the impasse.

About 30 airport staff, including ticket clerks, security personnel and fire crews, are involved in the pay claim.

To cater for the operation of the return daily service, about 15 new staff have been trained in airport duties but cannot take up duty until the dispute has been resolved.

The union has sought a 33 per cent increase - £80 per week - for its members on top of the national pay agreement. Management says this is out of the question because it would add £3,000 per week to payroll costs.
