The flights to Prague will start in April, to Rome in May, to Amsterdam in June, and to Warsaw from October. Knock airport's marketing and sales manager, Desmond O'Flynn, said they would be operating the new routes with United Travel.

€33m complex for Co Kerry town

Some €33 million is to be invested in a public-private partnership in Killorglin, Co Kerry, in what has been described as the biggest investment of its type in an Irish town of its size.

The Killorglin Town Centre project will include a new library, tourist office, council offices, retail units, apartments, office accommodation, plaza and car park.

Kerry County Council is to invest €9.4 million and the remaining money will be invested by Laune Properties Ltd, a property development company.

Planning permission has already been received and work will begin before the summer.

Farmer killed by newly calved cow

The Irish Farmers' Association has warned that newly calved cows can change from relatively docile animals into potential killers following the death of an elderly farmer in Co Mayo at the weekend.

Michael Mangan, who was in his 70s, was killed at his farm at Glenmore, Crossmolina, on Sunday after being severely butted by a cow which had earlier given birth to twin calves.

It is understood that Mr Mangan, a married father of seven, had taken one calf away and had returned for the other when the enraged animal turned on him.

Mayo woman dies in freak accident

A woman died in a freak accident when a wooden stake, part of a roadside fence, crashed through the windscreen of her car, an inquest was told yesterday.

Ann McNamara (44), Collacloon, Louisburgh, Co Mayo, was the sole occupant of the car which collided with a railing near her home on November 12th last, the inquest, conducted by south Mayo coroner John O'Dwyer heard.

Evidence was given that Mrs McNamara had sustained severe head injuries which were apparently caused by the timber beam that came through the windscreen.

A verdict of accidental death was returned.

Bishop offers new site for school

The Bishop of Killaloe, Dr Willie Walsh, has put forward a new alternative site for Ennis National School in Co Clare.

The school's principal, Gary Stack, last week criticised Dr Walsh for reneging on a written promise to provide a preferred alternative site for a new school building.

Cork to host chess championship

Over 100 chess players representing more than 20 countries around Europe will converge on Cork next week for the European Union Chess Championship.

Europe's leading professional players and talented amateurs will battle it out during the 10-day championship, which starts on Match 21st andwill be followed by the annual Cork Chess Congress from the April 1st to 3rd.

Speciality food diploma set up

Small-scale food production has received a boost with the setting-up of a unique diploma in speciality food production in Cork.

UCC's faculty of food science and technology, Ballymaloe Cookery School, cheesemakers' association Cáis, Teagasc and the veterinary department at Cork County Council have combined to develop the diploma.
