Tens of thousands of South Koreans have held a peaceful candlelight rally in the capital to protest against the impeachment of President Roh Moo-hyun last week by the opposition-controlled parliament.
Since the parliament stunned many and thrust the country into uncharted territory on March 12 by impeaching Roh for breaking an election law, thousands of South Koreans have thronged parts of central Seoul to hold peaceful rallies.
The Constitutional Court has six months to decide whether to uphold the vote, during which time Prime Minister Goh Kun is acting president.
In the biggest rally in since the crisis unfolded, around 70,000 protesters packed a main street in central Seoul.
About 1,500 people who held a separate protest against the dispatch of troops to Iraq and to mark the first year's anniversary of the US-led war on Iraq later joined the rally.
