A Kurdish group says the former vice president of Iraq and number 20 on a US list of Saddam Hussein's 55 most-wanted lieutenants has been captured by US Kurdish allies in northern Iraq.

"He [Taha Yassin Ramadan] was detained in Mosul as a result of co-operation between the political parties and residents," the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) told Reuters in Baghdad.

The PUK is one of two main Kurdish parties in northern Iraq that fought with US forces in the war in Iraq.

"He was captured by the PUK in Mosul last night and he is being transferred to Sulaimaniya. We are waiting for more details," said a PUK spokesman.
