SOUTH DUBLIN COUNCIL:LABOUR AND Fine Gael consolidated their dominance in South Dublin County Council, while the Green Party lost both its seats in the constituency.

With Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael still fighting for the final seat in Tallaght South last night, Labour – which held the mayoralty before the election – had increased its seat total from seven to nine, including three out of six in the most populous ward, Tallaght Central.

In Lucan, Fine Gael’s Derek Keating – formerly an Independent – was comfortably elected on the first count.

Two former PDs who stood for Fine Gael – Cáit Keane and Tony Delaney – were returned in Rathfarnham and Clondalkin respectively.

Fewer than 40 votes separated Ms Keane from Fianna Fáil’s John Lahart, who was also elected on the first count.

Boundary changes and sitting councillor Tony McDermott’s move to run for the city council left the Greens facing a struggle here.

But the loss of their two seats was nonetheless one of the day’s striking outcomes.

There were no gains for Sinn Féin, which retained its three seats, including that of former TD Seán Crowe in Tallaght Central.

Gino Kenny secured a seat for the People Before Profit Alliance in Clondalkin.
