The Labour Party has called for a new measures for the sale of state lands that would allow the Government to benefit financially if the land was resold at a large profit within a certain amount of time.
The call comes after reports emerged that the developers who bought the Clancy Barracks site in Dublin stand to make a €120 million profit on the land.
The site was sold for €25 million in 2004; the developers are believed to be considering a sale for €145 million.
Labour's defence spokesman Joe Costello urged the Government to ensure that this situation is not repeated.
"Although no work has been done on the site, this would allow the developers to make a massive profit of €120 million. If this were to happen I believe that taxpayers would be outraged.
"There is apparently nothing that can be done to prevent this happening in the case of the Clancy Barracks, but provisions should be included in all future contracts to prevent it happening in the case of any other State land that might be sold," he said.
He said the deal not only represented poor value to the taxpayer, but also was a missed opportunity to acquire the land for social and affordable housing that would have helped Dublin's housing crisis.
