Labour party members will hand out one million "pledge cards" around Britain today, as the Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair repeated his call for voters to give him an "instruction" at the ballot box to carry out a programme of investment and reform of public services.

Mr Tony Blair

Mr Blair, speaking at his party's election news conference in Salford, promised to "stand and fight for the hard-working families of Britain".

He said: "Today is pledge day. A day when every Labour candidate takes our crusade for schools and hospitals to every part of the country.

"One million pledge cards will be issued from street stalls across Britain. Ministers will be out in every region. Labour Party members will be taking this message to every community: vote for schools and hospitals on June 7."

Mr Blair went on: "I ask the people of Britain to vote Labour for a Labour government that will deliver on the five pledges we put to them now."

Labour's election pledges printed on the cards are:

  • Mortgages as low as possible
  • 20,000 extra nurses, 10,000 extra doctors
  • 10,000 extra teachers
  • 6,000 extra police recruits
  • Winter fuel payment retained, minimum wage rising to £4.20

The prime Minister said each pledge was a reason to vote Labour on June 7th - "each one a vote for a cause, not just a party; a set of values not just a group of politicians; a vote that will send a message that never again should any party propose to lead this country by proposing policies that would cut education and health".
