The prominent anti-war activist, Mr Roger Cole, has been selected to stand for the Labour Party in next year's local elections.
He had campaigned against the Nice Treaty, contrary to the Labour Party which supported a Yes vote.
Mr Cole, chairman of the Peace and Neutrality Alliance, was selected along with Cllr Jane Dillon-Byrne, to stand in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown ward at a selection convention on Thursday night.
Mr Cole said yesterday the elections next June would be "about much more than local politics.
"They are going to be a major moment when the Irish people have a chance to say what they think about this Government. They are going to be a real moment of revolt against [the Taoiseach, Mr] Ahern."
His key campaign message would be to demand that the Government "stops spending money on supporting George Bush in Iraq and puts more money into local government", he said.
"I have no track record in local campaigning, but I know people agree with what I have been arguing, that Ireland has been dragged into supporting a war the majority of Irish people don't support."
He said the continued presence of American troops in Iraq would still be an issue next June as "thousands of American troops are still passing through Shannon Airport".
The selection of Mr Cole and Ms Dillon-Byrne will be ratified at the next meeting of the Labour Party national executive council sometime over the next fortnight.
