Greater links between employers and local employment schemes to help solve the problems of long-term unemployed people have been called for in a report of the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed.

The report was based on research in the Ballyfermot area and was the culmination of a research project which earlier also covered Blanchardstown, Castlebar and Dundalk.

The research indicated an under-use of labour market services among the unemployed and employers in Ballyfermot, demonstrating the need for greater information dissemination.

The surveys came in the wake of the National and Economic Social Forum report on the role of the local employment services. Mr Tony Monks, of the INOU, said they had welcomed the NESF report which said the eradication of longterm unemployment was economically viable and that the Local Employment Schemes had a key role to play.
