A famous Co Mayo landmark, the Ice House in Ballina, which overlooks the Moy Estuary, was sold at public auction yesterday for €1.07 million.
The property, built in 1859, is the former residence of the Thornton family, which owned the Moy Fishery before it eventually came under the ownership of the North Western Regional Fisheries Board.
The Ice House has been bought by a private individual, who lives in Dublin, and who wishes to remain anonymous.
