Indian security forces shot dead six rebels in separate gunbattles in Anantnag district south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir state, Indian police said.

One army soldier was also wounded in the shootout.

Elsewhere, two militants and a policeman were killed in shootouts in the troubled valley and three separatist guerrillas were killed in a separate shootout. And an Indian soldier was killed and three wounded after they stepped into landmine near Ram Nagar in Udhampur district.

Tensions have soared between India and Pakistan after the December 13th attack on the Indian parliament that New Delhi blames on Pakistan-based rebels fighting its rule in Kashmir.

India has mounted a massive deployment of men and armour along its more than 3,000 km (1,900 mile) common border with Pakistan.

Pakistan has also ordered its troops to the border prompting fears the nuclear rivals may go to a war for the fourth time. Two of their three wars have been fought over Kashmir.

India, which accuses Pakistan of stoking the rebellion among the Muslim majority in Jammu and Kashmir, has demanded that Pakistan crack down on Islamic militants operating from its territory.

Pakistan, which says it provides moral and diplomatic support only to Kashmiris seeking self-determination, has rounded up hundreds of Islamic militants after the attack on parliament.
