Leaders of Nepal's political parties today urged caretaker Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to postpone polls scheduled to start in November because of the ongoing Maoist rebellion, officials said.
The party leaders said it would be impossible to hold elections in the current climate, with Nepal in the grip of a worsening insurgency, and called for the polls to be put off for six months.
"Leaders of seven political parties met today at the official residence of the prime minister where they suggested him to postpone the polls in view of the current political and security situation of the country," a spokesman said.
"A decision whether to postpone the polls will be discussed by the cabinet," he added, without saying when the cabinet will meet.
