League form counted for little in tonight's FAI Cup Carlsberg Cup second round matches as both Kilkenny City and Monaghan United found the kind of form they've been missing to dispatch higher ranked opposition.

First Division strugglers Monaghan took the lead against the Premier League's bottom club Dublin City courtesy of an Anthony Murphy goal in the nineteenth minute and were never seriously threatened. Dublin City were reduced to ten men in the second half when Andy O'Neill was sent off but despite throwing everything forward in the last ten minutes, Monaghan never looked under pressure.

Kilkenny shocked Bray Wanderers at the Carlyle Ground when they found their form on the road to turn the First Division form book on its head. Two goals in either half were enough to seal victory for the Cats.

It looked like their could be an upset on the cards when Wayside Celtic went ahead in the first minute against St Patrick's Athletic courtesy of a Wayne Callaghan goal. The Premier League club were stung into action and it was no surprise when Philip Shepherd equalised for the home side on 14 minutes. Eventually the home side ran out 4-1 winners and could have had even more.

Down at the RSC in Waterford, the home side opened the scoring against Sligo Rovers after two minutes thanks to a goal from Darrell Murphy. He doubled the lead on 35 minutes with an easy header and despite converting a second half penalty Sligo never looked like coming back into it.

Tullamore United seemed nervous in the opening stages against Athlone Town and despite having the opening chance they went behind to a 25-yard Adrian Murphy shot on 7 minutes. He scored again on 32 minutes and although Tullamore having chances in the second half Athlone had taken the foot off the pedal. Murphy completed his hat trick in the last minute of normal time.

The typically robust Munster derby between Cobh Ramblers and Limerick City was a six goal thriller with nine bookings and Cobh reduced to ten men after 67 minutes.

Derry will have been happy with their trip south to Galway, progressing to the third round courtesy of the only goal of the game.
