Lebanese parliamentarians have voted to retain Rafik al-Hariri as Prime Minister only a day after he resigned to pave the way for a government reshuffle.

Speaking to journalists, Hariri said he met with the Lebanese President and "he informed me of the results of the consultations he made with the deputies. The outcome was I was named to form the new government," he said.

"Tomorrow I will start consultations...with deputies in parliament," he added.

Hariri said 93 of 128 deputies had voted to keep him on to form the new cabinet. Hariri presented his resignation as Prime Minister yesterday in a step that was seen as partly triggered by mounting US tensions with Lebanon's political master Syria.
