Nick Leeson, the so-called "rogue trader" whose deals brought down Barings Bank, was banned from driving for 30 months today after pleading guilty to driving while drunk.

Magistrates at Watford also ordered the 34-year-old former trader to perform 120 hours of community service.

Leeson was arrested while driving his Jaguar in Watford on April 21st.

Prosecutor Mr Mark Fleckley said the former trader was found to be three times over the legal limit.

Leeson's lawyer, Mr Stephen Pollard, argued against a driving ban. He said Leeson, who was diagnosed with cancer in 1998, needed his car to visit doctors.

Pollard said Leeson also needed his car to complete a psychology degree at London's Middlesex University and to carry out charity work.

On April 21st Leeson was drinking with friends in a pub in Watford, Mr Pollard said. Later, he was due to meet other friends and "stupidly, and unforgivably, he decided to move his car. He did not intend to drive it home. He was moving it so that there was more chance it would not be vandalised."
