Peter Taylor became the first managerial casualty of the Premier League this season when he was sacked by Leicester City last night.

The club's board made the decision close to midnight after a meeting.

Leicester have made a disastrous start to the season, taking only five points out of a possible 24 with just one win.

Taylor's position has been threatened for a number of weeks, but he hung on when Leicester managed to put a temporary halt to their slide with a last-gasp 3-2 victory over Derby County two weeks ago.

But on Saturday they were beaten again, 2-0 at Charlton Athletic - their 15th defeat in 16 away games.

Taylor, a former England under-21 coach who was in charge of the senior international side for an interim period late last year before Swede Sven Goran Eriksson's appointment in January, had been at Filbert Street for 15 months.

The 48-year-old coach had replaced Martin O'Neill, who left Leicester to take charge of Celtic in June 2000.
