Street "ambassadors" could be on the beat in Limerick city by next summer, helping visitors with directions and offering information on activities and attractions.
The mayor of Limerick, Cllr Diarmuid Scully, has confirmed that a proposal to introduce the ambassadors will be raised at the next meeting of the City Development Board.
It is proposed that easily identifiable uniformed street ambassadors in the city centre would be on hand to offer assistance to tourists and visitors.
They would also carry two-way radios and would liaise with litter wardens, traffic wardens, and gardaí to ensure the city centre is safe and clean.
"Street ambassadors are already working very successfully in our sister city of Spokane in the US as well as in the city of Chester in the UK. I've placed the issue on the agenda of the next meeting of Limerick City Development Board and I see no reason why our first street ambassadors could not be in place as early as next summer," said Mr Scully.
It is proposed that they could be recruited from the long-term unemployed or people who have retired.
