A man in his 20s who was stabbed 10 times in an attack in Limerick on Monday was transferred yesterday from St John's Hospital, Limerick, to Cork University Hospital, where his condition was said to be "stable", writes Conor Lally.

The man was knocked down by a vehicle driven by his attackers at 1.30 p.m. on the Dublin Road. He was then stabbed 10 times. He is from the Prospect area of the city.

Fire scare at Leinster House

Part of the Leinster House complex was evacuated for close to an hour yesterday after glue being used by maintenance staff caught fire. The incident occurred in a services room being used by staff doing maintenance work.

Missing Dublin girl back with family

A 14-year-old girl who went missing from her home in south Dublin last week was reunited with her parents yesterday. Danielle Mooney, of Pearse Park, Sallynoggin, was reported missing to gardaí at Kill-o'-the-Grange station after failing to return home last Friday.

New policy group on mental health

Schizophrenia Ireland has welcomed the establishment of a new mental health expert group by the Minister of State for Health and Children with responsibility for mental health, Mr Tim O'Malley.

The expert group will prepare a modernised mental health policy framework. It will include the director of Schizophrenia Ireland, Mr John Saunders. "The inclusion of Schizophrenia Ireland in the expert group is an acknowledgement of the important contribution that people with severe mental illness and their caring relatives can make to a new mental health service," Mr Saunders said.

Proposals on back to school costs

Proposals to help lower-income families cope with back-to-school costs are expected to be announced today by the Labour Party's spokesperson on education, Ms Jan O'Sullivan. The proposals are part of a Labour Party study entitled "Back to School: Counting the Cost", which outlines the range of costs facing parents this autumn.
