Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government John Gormley made an order appointing Thursday June 12th as the polling day for the referendum on the proposal for the amendment of the Constitution contained in the Twenty-Eighth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2008.

Polling will take place between 7am and 10pm.

Maurice Coughlan, a principal officer in the Department of the Environment, has been appointed returning officer for the referendum.

Every member of the electorate, which currently totals 3,051,278, is entitled to vote.

Counting of votes will begin the morning after polling at various centres throughout the country. The overall national result is expected to be announced that afternoon at the Central Count Centre in St Patrick's Hall in Dublin Castle.

In a statement, the Department of the Environment advised that persons not on the electoral register may be eligible to apply for inclusion on the supplement to the register.

To be eligible, a person must be a citizen of Ireland, must be 18 years of age by polling day and must be ordinarily resident in the State.

An application for entry on the supplement to the register, which can be obtained from city and county councils or downloaded at www.checktheregister.ie, must be witnessed by a member of the Garda Síochána or, if the person cannot attend their local Garda station, by an official of their city or county council provided they state the reason why they were unable to attend a Garda station.

The final date for the receipt of completed application forms by the person's city/county council is Saturday May 24th.

Persons who are eligible for, but not already included in, the postal or special voters list, may apply for entry in the supplements to these lists which are published prior to each referendum.

These forms can also be obtained from the local city or county council.

The latest date before the referendum for receipt (by city/county councils) of supplement applications to the postal or special voters lists is two days after the polling day order is made ie tomorrow, May 14th.
