Liverpool and United crash out of Cup

Bolton sent holders Liverpool crashing out of the Carling Cup at Anfield this evening

Bolton sent holders Liverpool crashing out of the Carling Cup at Anfield this evening. There were only four minutes on the clock when Brazilian striker Mario Jardel was left in space to nod home Youri Djorkaeff's corner from close range.

Gerard Houllier's side were constantly frustrated by a resolute visiting defence until Danny Murphy nodded them level on 66 minutes. After Djorkaeff had seen his effort ruled out for a somewhat harsh handball decision in the build-up, Jay-Jay Okocha fired the visitors back in front with a stunning 25-yard free-kick on 78 minutes.

But with just two minutes left, Vladimir Smicer cracked in a superb leveller. The drama was not over, though, as Salif Diao upended Kevin Davies in the penalty area and Djorkaeff was the coolest man in Anfield as he converted to send Bolton through and the holders out.

First Division leaders West Brom added Manchester United to the scalp of Newcastle after beating Alex Ferguson's much-changed side at The Hawthorns. The match kicked off late because of traffic congestion around the ground - but the home faithful did not have to wait long before taking the lead.

Neil Clement swung the ball into the box, and was deflected back to defender Bernt Haas, who spectacularly volleyed the ball past Roy Carroll from the penalty spot on six minutes. The Baggies had a golden opportunity to go further ahead on 23 minutes when Danny Pugh upended Jason Koumas in the box.

However, Carroll flung himself down to his left to save the Welshman's spot-kick and kept United in it. Scott Dobie had only been on the pitch a matter of seconds when, in the 56th minute, he stooped to head in Clement's centre past Carroll and into the far corner from six yards to send last year's finalists out.

Chelsea made hard work of seeing off First Division Reading at the Madejski Stadium Claudio Ranieri fielded several of his top stars, although they could not find a way past Royals' keeper Marcus Hahnemann in the opening 45 minutes.

Hernan Crespo hit the post, but also squandered two glorious opportunities. However, the £16.8million Argentinian striker had better luck when he turned provider 12 minutes into the second half, cutting the ball back for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to smash home and put Chelsea into the last eight.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa beat first division Crystal Palace 3-0 while Tottenham Hotspur beat Manchester City 3-1, helped by a first goal for the club by £6.75 million striker Helder Postiga.

The match between Middlesbrough and Everton finished goalless and went into extra-time.
