A £5 million living memorial is to be built on the site of the Poppy Day massacre in Enniskillen. The development will include a community centre, residential accommodation and an art gallery, it was announced yesterday.
Eleven people were killed and 63 injured when an IRA bomb exploded at the town's cenotaph during a Remembrance Day service in 1987. The project is being promoted by the Fermanagh Higher Bridges Project, and construction work is due to begin early next year. "We are creating a living memorial rather than a monument as it is about hope, the future and bringing the best out of people," said Ms Aideen McGinley, chief executive of Fermanagh District Council.
