Gardaí are investigating a shooting at a house in Limerick last night.

Alderman Michael Kelly claimed he was attacked by two masked men at his house on the Ballyneety road. He is recovering in hospital fom pellet wounds, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A Garda spokesman said details were inconclusive at this stage, but it appears Mr Kelly may have been shot after opening his front door.

The spokesman would not speculate as to a motive but said the scene had been preserved for technical examination.

Mr Kelly alleged that the two men who attacked him were dressed in Garda uniforms. He has been interviewed by detectives in hospital.

Mr Kelly is a self-confessed criminal turned businessman. He has spent ten years in prison for various offences including assault.

He was elected Alderman in the 1999 local elections.
