Lomu to discover World Cup fate on Monday

Jonah Lomu will know his World Cup fate when the New Zealand selectors name their World Cup All Blacks squad on Monday.

Lomu missed Wellington's provincial match against Waikato last night, the last chance the selectors had of seeing the giant winger in action before making their final decision.

The 28-year-old has been sidelined with a recurrence of a kidney complaint that requires regular treatment and played little this year but still hopes to play in his third World Cup in Australia in October and November.

Another doubt is flyhalf Andrew Mehrtens, who played alongside Lomu in the 1995 final in South Africa, and looks unlikely to be risked after an injury-plagued season.

The selectors will be concentrating on the merits of the aggressive North Harbour utility forward Troy Flavell and the Otago quartet of scrumhalf Byron Kelleher, hookers Anton Oliver and Tom Willis and lock Simon Maling.

The 22 who either played or sat on the bench during the Bledisloe Cup triumph over Australia last weekend will be in the squad. Add to them injured prop Carl Hoeft and number eight Rodney So'oailo and the selectors need to find another six players for the tournament starting on October 10th.
