Food retailer Londis today posted a 12 per cent increase in profit to €5.1 million for 2006 on the back of a 6 per cent rise in wholesale turnover.

The group, which has a network of 360 stores in Ireland, said turnover was €355 million last year and that its shares were now valued at €79.53, each of which represents an increase of 27 per cent on the previous valuation.

Londis said it expected to add a further 40 stores in 2007, bringing total employment across the network to almost 8,000 staff.

The group said a new €6 million corporate support headquarters and an extension of the company's warehouse and distribution facility in Johnstown, Co Kildare, was under way.
