The crash happened at 8am on Pearse Road in the twon. No other vehicles were involved, according to gardaí.

Earlier, gardaí named the 19-year-old woman who died in a crash in Co Cork on Monday evening. Sian Roberts from Kilbarry, Fermoy, died when her car was in collision with two other vehicles at Brooklodge, Glanmire, at 6.35pm.

She was one of three young people who died on the State's roads on Monday.

A man (23) died when his car collided with a petrol tanker shortly after 7.30pm near the Boyne Valley Hotel on the outskirts of Drogheda, Co Louth.

The dead man, the sole occupant of the car, was living locally, and it is believed he was originally from Romania. He was taken to Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital but died from his injuries.

A young man died when his car hit a kerb and turned over in Co Donegal. The incident happened at Bruckless, on the road between Donegal town and Killybegs, shortly after 4pm on Monday.

Ciaran Herrity (28) was a student at tourism college in Killybegs and was believed to have been on his way home to Letterkenny.

A total of 17 people have died on the State's roads so far in 2008, compared to 13 for the same period last year.
