Louth man killed as van crashes into river

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to an accident on the Ardee-Carrickmacross road on Saturday night to contact them

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to an accident on the Ardee-Carrickmacross road on Saturday night to contact them. The single-vehicle accident claimed the life of Mr Thomas Murray (24), Muff, Louth village. His 16-year-old brother found his body trapped in his overturned van in the Lagan river on Sunday night. His family began searching for him when they realised no one had had contact with him after 11 p.m. Saturday. He was on his way to visit his girl friend, Ms Emma Byrne, and two-year-old son Thomas jnr, who live in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan.

The van appears to have gone out of control at Aclint Bridge. It left the road, missing both the barrier and wall on the bridge, before going down the 20ft embankment and into the river. His body was taken to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan.

Gardai are satisfied no other vehicle was involved, and the investigation is continuing. They have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed it to contact them at Ardee Garda station on 041-6853222.
