A plan to develop a refuse landfill site at Lusk, Co Dublin, is set to get the go-ahead from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The EPA today announced its proposed decision to grant a licence to Fingal County Council to develop a landfill site at Nevitt, Lusk.

The site would take in approximately 500,000 tonnes of non-hazardous waste annually.

The EPA has decided to grant the licence following the submission of an environmental impact statement by Fingal County Council, as well as 105 submissions by various parties.

The proposed decision has over 130 conditions including the control of emissions from the site, the collection and treatment of any leached material from the site and the collection and treatment of any landfill gases with a view to their use in electricity generation.

Farmers claim their livelihoods will be threatened by the dump and that suppliers and stores will not want their produce over fears of contamination.

Concerned parties now have a 28-day period until October 17th in which to register objections with the EPA.
