Police in the north believe they have struck a severe blow against loyalist paramilitaries with the seizure of a heavy-duty machine gun in Co Antrim today.

The Bren machine gun was found during a search of a house at Ballyclough Road, Bushmills, as part of an investigation into loyalist paramilitary activity in the Ballymoney and Moyle areas.

The PSNI's Detective Inspector Nicholas McCaw said: "I firmly believe that this morning's weapon find has dealt a severe blow to loyalist paramilitaries operating in the North Antrim area."

He added: "I am delighted that this firearm has been taken out of the hands of ruthless people who would readily use it to inflict death and injury."
