Ireland’s Des Smyth has lost a share of the lead on an increasingly crowded leaderboard in the second round of the Madeira Island Open.
No fewer than 21 players ended the first round within two shots of the lead, held by Smyth and England's Malcolm Mackenzie on six under par.
And with many of the leaders now on the course, Smyth has seen that lead overhauled with Mackenzie once again the early pacesetter moving to 9-under after just three holes.
In response, Smyth has picked up one stroke to move to 7-under but has watched playing partner Andrew Oldcorn move into second spot on 8-under par.
Sweden's Jarmo Sandelin, one of only two of the world's top 100 playing this week, had also picked up an early birdie to move to four under par while playing partner Seve Ballesteros, looking to make his first cut of the season, was one under.
Philip Walton, who was one shot of the lead after the first round, has yet to start.
