Malaria kills 300 in Kenya, thousands infected

Hundreds of people have been killed by an outbreak of malaria in western Kenya.

Hundreds of people have been killed by an outbreak of malaria in western Kenya.

Officials say warm and wet conditions have helped the disease flourish where it normally doesn't strike.

Medical Services Minister Maalim Mohamed told parliament that 294 people have died from malaria and more than 150,000 have been infected since early June.

The outbreak is centred in the highlands of the Rift Valley and Nyanza provinces northwest of the capital, Nairobi.

"The malaria epidemic has been precipitated by heavy rains that have been witnessed in the recent past in the region," Mohamed said.

"Communities living in this region are not commonly exposed to malaria infection ... hence the explosive number of cases being recorded."

Mr Mohamed said the government has set up task forces to monitor and control the disease in the region's hardest hit by the outbreak.
