Gardaí renewed their appeal for public assistance after confirming that one of two men stabbed on Benbulbin Road, Drimnagh, at 6.50pm had died. The investigation was elevated to a murder inquiry today following the death of the man in his late 20s.

It later emerged that a 19-year-old had been taken into custody in relation to the incident which left another Polish national, also in his late 20s, on a life-support machine.

Superintendent Bart Faulkner said: "This is a terrible crime which has been committed not just against new members of our community but against the community itself.

"The good people of Drimnagh are appalled at what has happened in their neighbourhood.

"We are asking people to come forward with information and to work with us in achieving justice for these young men and their families."

At least three men were involved in the altercation with the two Poles and detectives believe there were a number of witnesses, some of who are minors.

Both victims were taken to St James's Hospital where one died today from stab wounds to the head. The man on a life-support machine was stabbed through the throat.
