A 19-YEAR-old man was killed early yesterday when the car he was driving left the road and struck a ditch near his home in Co Donegal.

Christopher Kane, from Mountcharles, who died in the crash, had been due to emigrate to Australia.

His 18-year-old only brother Declan, a passenger in the car, and two other young men in their late teens were injured in the single-vehicle incident.

They were taken to Letterkenny General Hospital but gardaí said their injuries were not life-threatening.

Garda forensics experts yesterday examined the scene of the crash, which happened at 2am at a bridge at Station Road, Mountcharles.

Gardaí believe Mr Kane lost control when the Peugeot 207 crossed to the wrong side of the road, struck a ditch and careered onwards before stopping when the driver’s door hit the bridge 30 to 40 feet away.

Donegal town fire service and gardaí from Glenties and Donegal attended the scene.

A relative of the dead youth said his flight to Australia had been booked and he had planned to go within weeks.

The road where the crash took place was closed for several hours and traffic was being diverted while gardaí conducted their examination.
