A man (19) has appeared in court on charges connected with an assault that led to the death of his father in Co Cavan yesterday morning.
Seamus Fitzgerald was charged this morning with assault and recklessly, or intentionally, causing serious harm to his father, Jim Fitzgerald, at Lisgar, near Bailieboro, at around 2.30am yesterday.
Businessman Mr Fitzgerald (54) was found dead at the house. He had been stabbed.
Monaghan District Court was told today that more serious charges were likely to follow.
The court heard that when charged yesterday under Section Four of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act, Mr Fitzgerald replied "No".
Gardaí opposed an application for bail. The court was told that when arrested, Mr Fitzgerald was carrying €3,000 in cash and his passport.
Judge Sean MacBride remanded the accused in custody to reappear at Cloverhill Prison court in January 13th.
