GARDAÍ IN Co Meath are trying to trace the movements in Navan on Sunday of a 63-year-old man who was found unconscious with a serious head wound after apparently being assaulted early yesterday morning.

The man, identified by gardaí as “Martin”, was found by a taxi driver on Academy Street, some distance from the town centre, at about 12.30am yesterday. He was in a critical condition in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda yesterday.

It is believed he sustained his head injuries after being assaulted by a group of up to four people.

There was no known motive for the assault, said a Garda spokesman. The man’s wallet, cash and mobile phone were still on him.

Garda Supt Michael Devine said: “We are interested in speaking to three or four people seen in or about Academy Street between midnight and 1am. There were four people, possibly two of them were women.”

Gardaí believe he drove from his home in Athlone to Navan in a grey VW Passat car which has an 04 D registration. Gardaí can be contacted on 046-907 9930.
