A world record attempt for charity was aborted earlier today when Dubliner Feilim O'Maolain ended his quest to swim 56-miles from Holyhead to Dublin.
A mixture of cold water, jellyfish and fatigue took their toll on Mr O'Maolain's attempt to be the first person to swim the stretch of the Irish Sea, and he ended his swim after completing almost 23 miles. He swam without a wetsuit or the aid of fins.
The Dubliner had hoped to complete the Holyhead to Dublin swim in 45 to 50 hours. In 1998 Mr O'Maolain swam the English Channel in a time of 24 hours.
He dived into the sea at 12.48am on Monday and had a 30-foot boat accompany him on his journey. He could not touch the boat or anyone on board it. The crew included an observer, pilot, skipper, para-medic and feeder.
Mr O'Maolain's attempt to become the first person to swim between Wales and Ireland was in aid of the Capuchin Day Centre for Homeless People. The centre will still receive the sponsorship money raised. A spokesperson could not confirm to ireland.comhow much had been raised.
