A man accused of three arson attacks on two Dundalk churches over the weekend has been remanded in custody at a special court sitting in Co Louth.
Liam Walsh (48), Road Two, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, is charged with committing arson twice at the Church of the Holy Family, Muirhevnamor, and once at the Marist church.
He is accused of damaging two exterior doors by fire, the interior and carpet of the Muirhevnamor church and damaging the roof and gallery area of the Marist church.
Garda James Kilgannon applied yesterday for Mr Walsh to be remanded in custody as he said he had a 1.5-litre container filled with oil when he was arrested on Tom Bellew Avenue, Dundalk, at 3pm on Sunday.
Judge Flann Brennan remanded Mr Walsh in custody until Dundalk District Court tomorrow and directed that he undergo psychiatric evaluation.
Mr Walsh asked: "Why would you assume that I need psychiatric help?"
Judge Brennan replied his decision was based on the nature of the charges. However, Mr Walsh said: "The charges have nothing to do with mental health whatsoever."
He also told the court he did not want a solicitor to represent him.
Judge Brennan said he would appoint one on his behalf.
