The fire is believed to have started in the living room and, according to the Fire Service, was so intense it reduced everything in the room to ash. The alarm was raised at around 5.00 a.m.

Assistant Divisional Officer Isaac King said the house was well alight when crews arrived: "Breathing apparatus teams were committed for a rescue and gained access but they could not go up the stairs because they were no longer in existence.

"They had to go onto a flat roof via a ladder and gain access into the back bedroom, where they did find the casualty."
