Gardaí in Co Wexford are questioning a man after a raid on Castlebridge Post Office in the early hours of this morning.
The man is one of a gang of three who broke into Castlebridge Post Office just outside Wexford town at around 2 a.m. It is believed they planned to use sophisticated cutting equipment to drill from the first floor into the ground floor where the safe is stored.
A passer-by noticed a light on in the building and alerted the gardaí. A patrol car which was in the area at the time managed to catch one of the raiders. The man, who was arrested, is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Wexford Garda Station.
The other men fled the scene in a blue Ford Mondeo car which was abandoned a short distance away. Garda manned several check-points throughout the county today. They are seeking the driver of a silver coloured car which turned back from a check point on Rafter Bridge in Enniscorthy shortly before lunchtime.
The Gardai are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.
The Gardaí are also trying to establish if the robbery has any links with a number of other post office raids in Kiltealy, Ballindaggin, Ferns, Clonroche and Ramsgrange, over the past three months.
